23 August, 2023 – Ofgem has provisionally approved the 275kV Argyll and Kintyre Strategy which will see 970MW of renewably generated electricity in the UK. Currently, the 60-year-old transmission network cannot handle the large increase in renewable energy connection applications.
23 August, 2023 – Tesco reveals a new set of goals to reach net zero operations by 2035 and its value chain by 2050. These goals have been independently approved by the Science-Based Targets Initiative and set a clear roadmap for Tesco over the next 10+ years.
10 August, 2023 – ScottishPower are set to upgrade their Hagshaw Hill wind farm by installing 14 new wind turbines on site. The site has been in operation for almost 30 years and now with the repowering of the site, its lifespan can be extended. This would see a generation capacity increase to over 79MW.
10 August, 2023 – This week, a new publicly owned energy company emerged in Wales. It is a co-operate between the Welsh government and Plaid Cymru and plan to expand community-owned renewable energy generation across Wales.
10 August, 2023 – Octopus has paired up with UKPN to provide households with free energy when there is excess renewable power. Customers will receive a notification of the times of the day they can ‘power up’ their homes for free. This will help UKPN avoid turning off renewable generators during surplus periods.
7 August, 2023 – Ideal Heating has invested £50m to transform its manufacturing facilities to produce air-source heat pumps. The company will train up to 5,000 staff a year to install and service the heat pumps. The chief executive, Shaun Edwards, stated that they are committed to remodelling their business to meet new consumer demands.
4 August, 2023 – The UK Government has recently agreed to a new master plan aimed at speeding up the process of delivering energy infrastructure. Between 2012 and 2021 the delivery timeframe for new projects increased by 65%, meaning this infrastructure is standing idle, sometimes for years.
4 August, 2023 – OfGem has approved a new green hydrogen project from gas distribution company SGM. The £30 million project aims to explore the viability of utilising existing gas infrastructure with hydrogen gas. If successful, this could lead to a large-scale decarbonisation project of Britain’s local transmission network.
4 August, 2023 – The Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) helps businesses set net-zero targets based on the latest climate science available. A new change in policy means that any companies found not to have followed through with their commitments will be publicly named on their dashboard with ‘commitment removed’ shown.
