17 January, 2023 – Last year Northern Ireland was able to generate 42% of their energy from wind power, accumulating savings of £500 million. This meant that Northern Ireland avoided importing pricey gas into the county to be able to fuel homes. Here renewables don’t only benefit the natural environment but customers’ energy bills too.
16 Jan 2023 – British gas is offering the lowest market rate for installing heat pumps starting at £2,999. They have also offered to match any other lower price that is being offered by a competitor that is MCS credited. This comes as an effort to push net zero goals and encourage low-carbon solutions.
13 January, 2023 – A new report published by Planet Tracker has outlined six different types of greenwashing that companies can be culpable of. These are broadly related to communications and marketing operations. The report aims to better inform investors and consumers of greenwashing, leading to more environmentally friendly decisions.
12 January, 2023 – The President-Designate for COP28 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been appointed. Al Jaber is the chief executive of Abu-Dhabi National Oil Corporation and the UAE’s Special Envoy for Climate Change. His appointment has sparked controversy, with some stating he has a conflict of interest with the oil industry.
12 January, 2023 – A new report from the International Energy Agency found that the global market for clean energy technologies will be worth an estimated $650 billion annually by 2030. This will lead to the establishment of 14 million green jobs. However, the report’s findings depend on countries delivering on their current climate pledges.
10 January, 2023 – The government is phasing out the current energy support scheme for businesses and introducing a new scheme in April 2023. This new scheme will give a discount on wholesale costs, rather than capping the prices which exist under the current scheme.
10 January, 2023 – The Scottish Government have recently announced plans to deliver an additional 20GW of low-cost renewable energy and 5GW of hydrogen production by 2030. At least 12GW of this will be delivered by onshore wind and the remaining 8GW will be from a mix of offshore wind, solar and tidal energy.
6 January, 2022 – The National Grid has stated that wind power produced a record amount of electricity in the UK throughout 2022. Although gas remained the largest source of electricity last year, the increase in generation from sources such as wind power alongside other renewable options show significant and important progress.
6 January, 2022 – Gloucestershire local authorities launch plans to invest thousands into new technologies to boost energy efficiency and save money on bills. Energy usage in buildings will be monitored and controlled, offering carbon and financial savings for the council as well as meeting net zero goals.
5 January, 2022 – MPs from across the political spectrum have insisted a “war effort” is needed to improve the energy efficiency of UK homes to the standards required to meet net zero targets. A damning statistic is quoted that 78% of the UK’s energy needs are still being powered from fossil fuel sources.
