2 March, 2023 – A recent report on global CO2 emissions published by the IEA found that global energy-related emissions increased by less than 1% in 2022. This is substantially less than what was projected, however, the current trajectory remains unsustainable, despite the growth in renewable technologies.
2 March, 2023 – MP’s are urging the government to state clearly which technologies it will support in aiding the decarbonisation of the transport sector. The Transport Committee said in their recently released report that the government must highlight specific pathways for the development and deployment of technologies.
1 March, 2023 – Associated British Posts (ABP) have released their ‘Ready for Tomorrow ‘sustainability strategy which pledges to reach net zero on their scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040. They also outline a plan for a £2 billion investment to reduce the environmental impact of its value chain.
28 February, 2023 – The UK government aims to include carbon capture power plants within their aim to remove carbon from electricity production by 2035. There are currently 3 proposals for carbon capture plant construction in the UK; one to be built in north Lincolnshire and two in Teesside.
23 February, 2023 – Ofgem has announced it will be cutting the amount suppliers can charge households for energy, however bills are still expected to rise to £3,000 on average come April. There is now increasing pressure for the government to stop the increase as the new price cap will reduce the cost of support.
23 February, 2023 – Vodafone have announced the signing of a second solar power purchase agreement, which will see the sourcing of renewable electricity from five solar farms. Vodafone expects this to cover 44% of its annual energy demand.
23 February, 2023 – The government is planning a reform of the current process for planning and delivering large-scale infrastructure projects. At present, these projects take an average of 12 years to implement, however with a new process in place, this will speed up the timeframe significantly.
21 February, 2023 – Experts have warned of a potential £62 billion clean energy investment shortfall over the next decade due to a recent fall in private sector investment. Without government intervention, the UK’s net zero targets and energy security are in jeopardy.
21 February, 2023 – Energy firms who wrongfully fitted prepayment meters in customers’ homes by force, must now begin compensating those who were affected. The announcement comes from the Ofgem Chief Executive Johnathan Brearley, who also stated that fines will be issued if any systematic problems are identified.
16 February, 2023 – Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) has reported that in the last year, domestic installation of solar panels has hit its highest levels since 2015. Over 130,000 roof mounted solar were registered, an increase of 114% from the previous year.
