30 March, 2023 – On Thursday 30 March, the UK Government unveiled its ‘Green Day’ plans which aims to “scale up affordable, clean, homegrown power and build thriving green industries”. This is after the government was heavily criticised for not going far enough in its Net-Zero strategy to reach the 2050 target already in place.

29 March, 2023 – Members of parliament are increasingly urging the government to rethink its stance on the subsidies provided for biomass systems. Questions first arose after Drax published that it made profited £893 million from government subsidies in 2021.

22 March, 2023 – Power generating company Drax has announced it is planning to halt its £2bn carbon capture project in North Yorkshire until it receives a firmer commitment from the UK Government. Specifically, it is looking for a commitment that ensures the funding will include the incorporation of bioenergy. 

£100m boost for biggest UK hydro scheme in decades

21 March, 2023 – A proposed new hydro scheme in the Scottish Highlands has received £100 million investment by SSE and will mean that the UK’s ability to store energy will double. This 1.5GW facility will ultimately help to combat climate change and improve the UK’s energy security. 

VAT-exempt batteries: Solar industry hails Budget breakthrough

17 March, 2023 – Plans to make battery installations VAT exempt when installed alongside roof-mounted solar PV panels. This policy would incentivise battery installation and help people during the energy price crisis by encouraging the take-up of power storage systems by commercial and domestic customers.
